If anyone can explain how to post a picture I will post a pic of my boat I will show you a pic of what it looks like out of the water. I just read the photo posting directions and It sounds a little too complex for me (I'm not good with computers) so if it is O.K. with Tim I'll email a pic to him. I...

I have a 1957 chinook 34. It's a good looking boat with a centerboard and I like it. I recently re-powered it with an outboard in a custom well (I couldn't afford a new diesel) I think that the centerboard is more of a maintenance problem more than anything but boat haulers love it and if you ever h...

decks

That was kind of my thoughts as well. The decks on my boat are just painted wood down below, but glassed up top. I guess fiberglass sheathing helps when you drop something on deck such as an anchor! I might just leave the decks and repair the bad spots (most of deck is good) and just strip the glass...

finishing plywood decks

My fiberglass boat has wood topsides that have been glassed over. The decks are all 3/4" fir plywood over oak beams and the cabin sides are 1" solid mahogany. The fiberglassing was a pro job done about 25 years ago, according to a receipt. The glass is starting to seperate and crack from t...

fiberglassing

Yeah, I used polyester resin as I didn't know which was better. The guy at the plastic place said just use polyester. The project is an outboard well that I built on my boat as I took the inboard out. I built it with strong wood and stainless screws, aside from some tabbing most of the fiberglassing...

Fiberglassing

I've been doing some fiberglassing on my boat and learned after the fact that when applying more than 1 coat of resin and cloth you must use unwaxed resin for the initial layups then waxed resin for the last layup so the surface will dry. I did 3 layups with all waxed resin and each layup had fully ...

seacocks

Yeah, that is a good idea with the screws, I never thought of that. If you do put the bolts right through the hull, what kind of bolts are you susposed to use, counter sunk bolts? This way you would have a nice smooth finish, or at least carriage bolts maybe. I don't know, how far one must go to sat...

what is a proper seacock?

When I bought my boat (first boat with thru-hulls below the waterline) I replaced the ancient looking seacocks when I had the boat hauled. I replaced the actual thru-hull mushrooms with new bronze ones, they are held in with the nut that comes with them, then I got the new bronze ball valves and sim...

I'd just leave the boat with a tiller. The setup your boat has sounds so simple and reliable

Center board trunk

Thanks Tim for the advice. No, there isn't any evidence of water in the ballast, no bulging on the outside of the keel or anywhere and the pin seems to be tightly in place. I do tend to worry a little to much! I'll just try to get as much bottom paint in there as I can next haul out. When I last had...

center board trunk

Hey, My boat has a full ballast keel and centerboard. I need some advice about a very small pinhole seawater leak coming from the top of the center board trunk under the floor boards, so when I had the boat hauled out I ground down the fiberglass and glassed over it. Back in the water and problem so...

Chinook

Does any one know what hull # it is? Mine is #3. That seems to be a good price. I paid about that for mine but it's not in as good as shape (but working on it) and mine has the original gas engine. Whoever got it got a good deal. The Chinook looks even better out of the water! Mike

Triton in picture

Hey Tim, I don't have any better pictures that show the Triton better but I do remember glancing accross at it and noticing the name "Tango" The name only caught my eye because I had looked at a 1965 Columbia 31 named "Tango" about 2 months ago, of course nice looking lines alway...

Hey, I sent Tim some recent pictures of the boat and even one of the original electrical panel for fun, he said he would post them. These pics were taken shortly after I bought it 3 weeks ago, I'll start working on it soon! Mike

I'm going to take some pictures of the boat soon and I'll send them in. I think I'll order the whole back issue of that mag, sounds like it will be well worth it!

Chinook 34

Thanks Rachel for the interesting info, it's cool that the boat has some history. I would really like to look at that article, I guess you can't e-mail it to me because it is in paper form. The GOB site will mail me a copy for a small price. It's interesting to know the original name, I would like t...

Yachtcon Chinook 34

Hey everyone, My name is Mike, I just joined the group. I also just bought my 2nd sailboat, much older than my first. The boat is a 1957 Yacht Constructors (later Cascade) Chinook 34 (hull#3). This boat has a fiberglass hull but wood decks. Is there anyone out there that owns one or knows anything a...
