cedar planking for bulkheads
Thank you for the great advise. I was pleased to see you are a marine carpenter by trade and appreciate your sage advice. I believe the companionway bulkheads on a Seasprite daysailer are structural as the berths butt up against them as well as the cockpit seats. So I guess I will abandon the planki...

Cedar Planking for bulkheads
I am still trying to decide on what type of material to use for my companionway bulkheads on my Seasprite 23 daysailer. While one obvious and most popular choice would be 5/8 marine plywood, I am concidering other options. I was thinking of going with hemlock but cannot find kiln dryed and dressed b...

resin or epoxy
Charlie, Thanks for the advise and for understanding what I really should have said re resin. You folks are a great resource for newcomers. This might be another stupid question, but here goes. The weather is getting cooler up here in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and one of the many things remaining on ...

fiberglass resin vs epoxy
I am getting ready to tab in new companionway bulkheads and berths on my Seasprite. This will be my first glassing work on a sailboat this size. Over the years I used fiberglass and resin to repair small sailing dinghies and canoes with good success. So the question is, will fiberglass tape with res...

Rachel, Sorry to disappoint you, but the mast on the Seasprite daysailer does end on the coach roof and not the deck. The headsail in the picture I posted was blocking the view of the base of the mast. If its any consolation the weekender version of this boat has the mast sitting on the deck. The ot...

Rachel, Thanks for the advice and here is a picture of Azul, a 23' SeaSprite daysailer, with her previous owners. This was taken back in 2000 when she was first lauched up here in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. She sailed the St Marys River up until 2003 and then sat on a trailer until I purchased her in...

heat gun paint removal
Tim,
Thanks for the advice and caution. Sounds like the old sanding with mask, goggles and paper suit, while time consuming, may be the safer way to go. The sooner I get this job done the sooner I can get my boat closer to the water.

P.S. -Great forum..

heat gun paint removal
I have several layers of peeling and cracked paint to remove inside the cabin of my Seasprite. I have been using a scaper and sander and now considering the use of a heat gun. I read somewhere, and should have saved it, about concerns with using heat guns on the exterior gelcoat. Would this be the s...
