Re: 1977 Islander 32 Project
Day 2 and 3 - The vberth is ready for resin and glass, and my luck is holding, I was able to save the headliner, don't want to open that can of worms. Aside from frozen zippers, it's in terrific visual shape. The free pedestal and wheel is old, I got it apart and the wheel hub is a standard 1" ...

Re: New (to me) pedestal and wheel
Chris - I think you could be right, there is a gear in there that's part of the lower spocket deal. No matter, I've figured that I'm just going to heave out the internal assembly, whihc will leave me with an empty pedestal with a spocket for chain/wire.

Re: Rudder stock tube question
Chris - Yeah - I thought of that! didn't originally, but Edson website on tiller to wheel conversion had it noted.

Re: Synthetic rigging?
Have been following the development of synthetic rigging, and it seems reasonable only for higher end race boats with large budgets. the downsides of all the new synthetics far outweigh the main upside, which is reduced weight aloft.

used gear source
does anyone have any experience with Sailorman in Lauderdale? I will be in Florida the end of May, a couple of hours away. Have a long list of parts, pumps, fittings, etc to get for my Islander 32 refit. Is it worth the trip? Anywhere else in Florida? I've heard there is a place in St Petersburg also.

Re: electrical question
From bitter personal experience - start all new. If the boat is more than a few years old, the existing wiring will have enough issues that it's not worth saving.

Rudder stock tube question
Can anyone tell me what the fitting is? This is a picture of the rudder stock housing, I'm getting ready to cut it open to install a quadrant.

1977 Islander 32 Project
Day 1 - Tear out the rotten plywood in the V-berth, begin work on the new (to me) pedestal and wheel. Long way to go: Tiller to Wheel conversion install airconditioning for those July & August nights on the Chesapeake. re-wire the entire boat 12V (120V already done) relocate engine controls. lot...

New (to me) pedestal and wheel
Converting my Islander 32 from tiller to wheel. Was given an old pedestal and wheel. Began to disassemble the guts today, and am surprised at what I find. The axle that supports the wheel has a spocket, with chain, but the assembly also has a hollow rectangular "tube" hanging from it, that...

Islander 32Mk II refit - the beginning
1977 Islander 32 Mk II - after owning her for 10 years, time for a refit. Tentative project list, besides all the small routine stuff. New portholes all around tiller to wheel conversion 12 volt rewiring, 120V already done air-conditioning, found a suitcase marine aircon for $300 new hull stringers ...

Porthole question - Islander 32
I am starting a 1.5 year refit on my 1977 Islander 32 - I'm sure there will be many more posts and questions before Spring 2011. My portholes are crazed and oxidized, need replacement. They are 1/4 plexiglass, in hard plastic frames which are secured with caulk. I have a source for my choice of repl...
