Re: Portlight gaskets
So I'm still hashing around solutions for my gasket issue. My thinking is that if i buy the straight stock and then bend it around the radius of the oval light it will bunch up and not conform properly. So i'm thinking more along the lines of making a mold out of Starboard and filling it with some k...

Portlight gaskets
Hi, I have all six portlights out of the boat and am getting ready to paint. The windows have all been cleaned up and are shinny chrome and bronze varigations. The gaskets where shot. The ones that seal the outside ring are pretty easy to fab. they're flat and about .300... The inner seals that seal...

refinishing old chromed bronze port lights
Hi, i have 5 port lights off of a 30 foot Soverel 1972. I'd like to get them into serviceable shape. As i investigate the re-plating shops it sounds expensive. They are oval and 6.5 x15 inches. There are like 5 different pieces per unit which includes the dogs. Any body have this done here. i wonder...

Re: Easy way to remove fiberglass from your skin
For me i found that wearing the elastic arm coverings along with rubber gloves was helpful. Can't reuse the arm protectors very effectively. Had one fellow put on some used ones and turn them inside out......

Re: So you want to paint .......
I understand that supplied air would be the most desirable situation. We've been using organic canisters with face masks and i believe they are adequate when we are outside. Am i wrong in this thinking?. I sure don't smell any sweet stuff when i have them on. Is there a preferred mask for rolling or...

Re: So you want to paint .......
When we spray paint we wear respirators . We spray or broadcast the nonskid material from the gun. When we roll the Awlgrip on we haven't used gloves , respirators or goggles. But thanks for the Heads up on the safety equipment. We are outside and not in confined spaces. As we progress we will take ...

Re: So you want to paint .......
Yes Tim.....The spraying process for us has shortened the down time for the boats. When we rolled with the foam rollers it took 3 separate days with longer wet times for insects to dive bomb into our finish. Awlcraft also makes sense for us because it can be repaired more easily than Awlgrip. And of...

Re: So you want to paint .......
Yes .Evercoat is a polyester glazing putty. Which is relly good and fast at filling small imperfections on the Scots we're working on. In this pic Tony is filling tiny imperfections in the hull. Looks like a Jackson Pollack painting.

Re: So you want to paint .......
Another pic of masking and filling Most times the nonskid is added to the paint and rolled on. Getting it even is the trick.......This is the first i've seen it sprayed on....It seams to work though. Rich P.s. So to be clear the guy on the right is rolling on the light blue paint with a smooth foam ...

Re: So you want to paint .......
So to expound a little..... as subsequent coats go on we can add evercoat filler and fair...........Danny does this for a living and will not spray.... The boat yards won't allow him to.. and he feels like he gets better economy out of his paint . After rolling on the slick areas he then masks the a...

Re: So you want to paint .......
sorry bouit the lack of pictures. It's really hard to get good detail but i'll try. The filling is on poor crazing gelcoat and just previous holes from fittings. In general i try to fill holes from screws with epoxy and filler. subsequent filling is done with evercoat. that has been stiffened with c...

So you want to paint .......
My Quick study is with guy Dannny who has been in the business for 20 years...... He comes into our boat restoration process and does the following: The boat( 19 foot flying scot) is upside down. We know where the water line is. We spray black crappy paint on the freeboard (from water line to toe ra...

Latex paint. in a boat yard in ft pierce floroida. He was put in on a monday and out by a friday. His paint job was marginal by most standads but i congradulated him for his expediancy and also envied his time out on the water. Re: Protecting unfinished fiberglass
Hi, I'm new to board but been doing boat work for a while now. I'm working with a crew of older guys restoring flying scots at a sailing center here in florida. Our local restoration guy had us sand down the crazing in the gelcoat on our first project and then coat with west system epoxy on the enti...

Re: Porthole question - Islander 32
Hi, I was thinking that a "multi tasker" tool might be helpful. Harbor frieight sells one really cheap. There are others that would vibrate like the devil in that tight sliver of a space.
