Re: Mainsheet reeving
S-599: I have a Morgan 24 with a 4:1 mainsheet about same sail area as yours. The boat is centerboard and fairly tender, so the mainsheet doesn't load up that much. I have a traveler but previously had the lightning rig described above by others. I'd recommend a Harken hexaratchet with cam cleat. It...

Looks a lot like teak flavored Life Calk to me.

Re: Filler for deep bilges
One other thing to be aware of is how your boat is blocked on the hard. Yards will sometimes block the keel fore and aft -- primarily to take the ballast (and hull) weight and stabilize against toppling with hull poppets. Advise your yard not to block under your sump, and only under the ballast. Els...

Re: Barlow 2 wire halyard winch
P: To guide the wire into the inboard track with wings, you don't need to put your fingers into the reel area, just guide the wire above the winch toward the mast the last couple of turns. You can use the palm of your gloved hand while cranking the halyard. I recall doing this on a big boat in colle...

Re: Barlow 2 wire halyard winch
Paulus: That's exactly what the channel is for -- the last few turns. Otherwise, when loaded up, the wire would jam in the reel. It's also used after reefing. Those winches aren't used much anymore. Fell out of favor on big boats when high modulus line replaced wire. Some of those winches could hurt...

Re: New batteries and charger
D: My only suggestions may be redundant. I'd suggest a field disconnect switch on your battery switch if there is any chance the alternator output could be isolated from a battery Not familiar with combiners -- will the alternator adequately sense the big battery? My alternator guy said that there w...

Re: Stove Enclosure
For offshore, we have installed simple retainers to keep the stove on its gimbals if rolled. Small diameter SS 7x19 wire with swaged loops in each end. One loop goes over the stove pin (Force 5) that sits in the gimbal plate. The other end is screwed down to the enclosure wall below the bottom of th...

Re: Stove Enclosure
FWIW: On our 40 footer, we have used the cooktop (not oven) offshore in a chop for deliveries and Bermuda races. You will get some food spatter on the surround and on the side of the oven which would make cleaning desirable. On my old boat with a beautiful Taylor brass stove, the food spatter staine...

Re: Cabin Sole
May be a bit out of the box, but I used Treadmaster on my Morgan 24 sole. Had to replace 3/4" plywood from 1968 that, like yours, was installed first and the cabinetry was built on it. New sole was epoxy sealed plywood. The bilge on the Morgan was non existent, and the hull was prominent. Tread...

Re: Why use propane when you can use kerosene?
Had a Taylor kero 2 burner stove/oven on Luders 33. Supply was pressurized from former alcohol tank. Hot, pretty reliable. Odor was more tolerable than alcohol, but we NEVER cooked under sail/rough conditions requiring the hatches to be closed. Previous posts should be noted re preheating -- yes, yo...
