Very nice personal touch. I can't wait to see the table. Did you 'machine' the insert yourself? If so is there a technique we should know about or is it a tool we souldn't live without?

Sawwweet! Tell me, Joe, when did you first come up with the idea of building a classic wooden boat? Seriously, that toe rail alone will set new standards for most of us. Add in the eyebrows and a couple of other surprises we haven't even seen yet and there is going to be some serious boat envy out t...

Keelbolts I'd have to agree with you on that point. With today's models, be it mast or boom mounted, main roller reefing may be better, but, the general concensus seems to be the older versions are little more than junk. They are even considered a liability by some. Quite possibly for the reasons yo...

While on vacation I stumbled across a stunning beauty hanging on a mooring. Normally I don't fall for boats with flush decks, but there was 'just something about her...' I asked some of the locals and yachties that seemed to be in the know, but, no one in the bay seemed to know anything about the bo...

C'Pete Where do you find this stuff? Of course I'm refering to the picture. Someone (correct me, right me, beat me) if I'm wrong, but isn't mineral spirits on raw fiberglass contraindicated? I could see using it on gel coat where you're not likely to get absorption. I just finished wiping the area w...

Silicone blunder-S.O.S.!

I recently posted this one on the Ariel Assoc. forum but nobody wanted to touch it. Don't be afraid to trod all over my pride as I already feel stupid enough. I'm more concerned with what needs to be done next. Because we don't have a heated shop here, our 'boat building' season is relegated to the ...

There are several Ariel owners who use a hinged step from Balanger Spars. It looks pretty substantial. The bottom plate has up-turned flanges on either side already punched with mounting holes for turning blocks.

With Jean du Sud Around the World?

I've watched it so many times I had to put it on a DVD. We have long winters here and I have no heat in the shop. It really was Yves' film that got me started loving Carl's lines, but, I still tell the Mrs. that it's all Tim's fault. She believes it and, for the most part, I'm off the hook! Thanks T...

Figment,

Hare brain? That's all relative. I think it's a pretty good idea. The execution would probably be the stumbling block for most, but, from what you've done so far you should have no problems with it.

Door County Daysailor

A few years ago the NETA had a link off of it's site for a little piece on a Triton that had been converted into a 30' daysailor. After looking at the October issue of Sail magazine I'd like to reread that article on the 'converted' Triton. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very web savy, but ...

How much do you really love your boat? If you want to be done with it there are the carbon fiber masts with the faux paint jobs that don't look that bad. Of course a couple of layers of fabric over the sitka would hardly be noticable, however, I doubt it would provide enought strength to suffice. Th...

In preparation for up and coming painting projects I've been reading everything with the words "awl" or "grip" in it. So far everything I've found indicates 545 has to be sprayed on. However, from your post here, George, it sound like you brushed on the primer extrapolating from ...

Bob, I strongly suggest using a surveyor if you don't want a project boat. They will flesh-out anything which may be or become a problem and you can base your purchasing decision on that. Tah-dah! I've finally made it to the outside of the boat. Of course, that doesn't mean we're done inside by any stretch.
