How many coats of primer, and finish?

Post by Jasper Windvane »

I looked through and could not fine an answer.. after the deck is recored, reattached, filled, sanded, etc.. and ready for paint ..

How many coats of the two part primer, Interlux, are necessary?

If two coats of primer, only one finish or is that two coats as well.

2 or 3 coats of primer, depending on coverage and how much you sand back off as you continue your prep. Often, after the first primer coat, you'll find you still have some filling, fairing and sanding to do.

The same applies to top coats. It goes on very thin, but two to three top coats are typical, unless you find yourself needing to do a lot of sanding.

I have learned the hard way that paint will not hide any imperfections while primer does. Prime and sand until it looks perfect without the shine. Then a minimum of 2 coats of paint or until you are happy plus one very thin final coat.

Uh- as a pro builder, let me modify your statement a tad-

Prime, FILL, sand until you are satisfied- Primer alone will NOT fill flaws

THEN topcoat
