We have recaulked the cockpit seats and it worked well. What did not work well was caulking where the deck meets the gunwhale??? Whatever you call the part that you lean back against. The gap here is at least an inch, I tried filling it with rope then caulking and it did not work. I used the black caulk in cockpit but white caulk on this part.
So, I am starting again...first, I think I will stick with black, even though this is where wood meets fiberglass (not more wood). Have any of you had any experience with caulking this kinds of gaps? I used boatlife, btw.

The only sealants meant to bridge that kind of gap are the kind used to seal between precast concrete planks in parking garages. Not fun stuff.
The problem isn't the sealant (use a polysulfide, by the way), it's the friggin huge gap. That should be a dead-tight joint. Worst-case scenario should be 3/16" maximum. Keep digging and find the root of the problem. Stripped fasteners would be my first hunch.
