What type sandpaper did you use. paper or cloth backed discs? Are the cloth that much better? I am planning on sanding bottom paint and also a deck recore project. You wrote that you grinded the top of the bottom skin pryor to bonding the core, did you grind this or sand and with what grit? thanks, love your sight

I use paper discs from McMaster-Carr. (Click www.mcmaster.com. It is outstanding stuff with a very heavy paper. I have never seen the need for cloth backing for normal sanding tasks. However, it is well worth it to buy good sandpaper--it makes all the difference.
For the 5" discs that I use, check out page 2540 of the McMaster-Carr catalog. (Just enter the catalog page number in the search box on the site.) They have all sizes, grits, and types of sandpaper, but this is what I use for my 5" Porter Cable. I keep 40, 80, 120, and 220 grits in stock in these discs. For any other special sanding needs, I also turn to McMaster-Carr (8" self adhesive discs, 7" sanding discs, 4-1/2" sanding discs, etc.)
Navigating the site can be a little challenging, but with perserverence you'll always find what you need. Good luck!
