Easy Off

Post by bhartley »

Pyxis' transom no longer says "Jackal" with a St. Augstine hailing port. Clean as a whistle thanks to Easy Off Oven Cleaner.

Tim had mentioned oven cleaner and a little research brought up Easy Off several times on other sites. I tried using the generic oven cleaner I had under my sink and it just made a smeary mess. I bought a can of "Easy Off" - the real McCoy and I took off the entire name/port in about 15 minutes with a putty knife and half a roll of paper towels. Active ingredient... LYE.

I cleaned up the residue with a paper towel and then wiped the transom down with soapy water and an older Scotch Brite pad (less scuffy). Black paint with a gray drop shadow -- all gone!

For those of you with new boats (or new names), I can't recommend Easy Off enough!

Sunny and mid-70's (unseasonably warm actually) today here in GA. A perfect day for sailing -- or working on the boat in the yard.

Cheers!

Paint

The Easy Off was used to remove the painted on name. It was painted with black writing with a gray shadow line. The original cheap-o oven cleaner made a smeary mess with black streaks. The Easy Off was quick and clean. The soapy water cleaned up the residue.

We'll be using vinyl letters this time. We have a great local sign place where we have gotten lettering for the other boats. The old vinyl letters came off quickly with a few passes of the heat gun and a little cleanup with Acetone.

Alas, doesn't always work

I tried using Easy Off on my boat's prior two-tone painted name with virtually no effect. I think it depends on the kind of paint used.

Active ingredient... LYE.
Does anyone have any experience with this taking off letters painted on Awlgrip?

I don't know, but acetone is safe to use on Awlgrip for this sort of thing.
