Adhesives

Post by heartofgold »

Tim,

I noticed that you attached much of the facing on the interior of the Daysailor with construction adhesive. Would you elaborate on exactly what product you used, why you used this product, and why you did not use a "more traditional" marine product, like say 3M 4200 or 5200?

Thanks.
Doug

On the interior, for a strictly cosmetic application, I felt a durable exterior grade construction adhesive would work well. These products are used widely in the construction industry and don't seem to fail in a variety of applications, so even in the interior marine environment I saw no reason to believe that they would not work extremely well.

Reasons to use construction adhesive:
  • $4 vs. $12 (or more) per tube
    Very fast cure time
East of application (much less stiff than the marine polyurethane adhesives)
    Quick availability
As you know, I am not one to skimp on materials, and would not choose a product like this for a critical marine application. For interior paneling and other similar applications, though, I feel that it is a good choice. 5200 or 4200 are just overkill for such chores.

Specifically, I used Ace brand premium construction adhesive.
