Instruments

Post by hesper »

Just installed a used Volvo diesel that is rated at 2400 rpm max.

My previous setup included a mechanical tachometer. This engine has pickups for rpm, temp, pressure. Any recommendations for good but reasonably priced instruments? Our friends at W**t Marine stock plenty of 7000 rpm tach's but I'm really hoping I don't get that high!

Hi Jim,

When I re-did the tach on my Triton I had to hunt around a bit for a "Diesel" tachometer. The diesel tachs go from 0 - 3600 RPM.

Personally, I would prefer the flywheel sender and tach combination that is made by the engine manufacturer. For example, I have a 25 year old Yanmar 3QM30(H) engine in my C&C40 but was still able to get the OEM flywheel sender and tachometer from a Yanmar dealer last year. I like flywheel driven tach systems because they are always exactly correct. You need a strobe to set up an alternator driven tach system even somewhat correctly and then you never really know.

Good luck with the project,

Hi Again Jim,

I forgot to mention the really cheap alternative to expensive OEM tach systems -- don't put a tach in at all. You don't really need one, and it's just another system to maintain.

Take Care,

The one on my Universal diesel takes the tach input from the alternator. You can then adjust the tach to calibrate it.
I want a shop!
