Bottom Paint suggestions for fresh water

Post by Ryan »

My boat will reside in a freshwater lake in NE Georgia, if I ever get it finished! Can you guys give me some suggestions for bottom paint that suits warm, freshwater? Thanks!

I was under the impression that freshwater boats didn't need antifouling paint.

I had a boat on Lake Grapevine near Dallas, Texas. In fresh water, bottoms foul very rapidly without bottom paint with a nasty, thick, green growth (especially in warm southern climates). Racing hulls tended to use something with teflon in it, and this seemed to have the best results in freshwater. We had a teflon bottom paint that I think is no longer made on our boat that was fairly easy to keep clean. Otherwise, something relatively inexpensive, like fiberglass bottomkote seemed to do just fine but didn't last as long.

Boats here tend to get a green/brown fouling on them fairly quickly. I will take a look at Teflon based paints. Thanks!
