DC/Baltimore area marine plywood sources

Talk about favorite or hated suppliers, recommend good materials or sources, or anything of the same ilk. This is also a good place to suggest unique ideas and innovations you may have come up with.

DC/Baltimore area marine plywood sources

Post by jhenson »

I'm looking for a place in the D.C./Baltimore/Richmond area that might carry marine meranti plywood in 3/8" thickness to do some modifications of the rear cabin and chainlocker bulkheads on my boat. As I get bogged down with weather delays on the deck re-core (doesn't look like I'll finish before winter now, whew what a job!), I guess I'll move below decks with a space heater to do interior structural work instead.

I can get okume and fir from the following places:

Harbor Sales in Baltimore: 9mm okume: $79 or: 3/8" fir $70

Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis: okume $89

Vienna Hardwoods in Vienna: 1/2" fir (closest dimension) $69

Since I only need a few sheets, I think that shipping from elsewhere would be prohibitive. Okume seems like overkill to me for this particular application, and I would like to avoid marine fir because I will be using some of the off-cuts in places that may get painted. I seem to recall some recent discussions about meranti being a cost effective solution to marine plywood used for structural bulkheads.

Thanks. I debated on adding this post to that thread, but thought it might be better suited to a new thread. The dialog got me thinking about this next wave of boat projects.

Yukon Lumber in Norfolk Va. might be an option. I have not been there myself, but my Dad says they are really great. They seem to have a nice variety of lumber for boatbuilding ect.
