CharlieJ and Tehani

Charlie, I hope you have Tehani tucked away and that you will be somewhere inland this weekend before Rita hits. We are keeping you and Laura in our prayers.

Hi Bruce,

I heard from Charlie and Laura - I'm sure they're too busy to respond right now, but won't mind if I let you all know what they are up to.

Bascially, Rita's heading right for their place on the Texas coast right now (near Port Lavaca). Tehani was moved to a protected slip, stripped (even the boom), and secured as well as possible.

They had a challenge getting some supplies they needed but did manage to get the house boarded up. They've removed a a LOT of their personal possessions, including important things like boating books and tools :-)

They planned to evacuate tonight and will be staying with relatives inland in Texas - I believe they will have a laptop with them.

So I think they will be safe, but let's hope Tehani stays strong.

Scary watching and waiting, isn't it. You go about your "normal" life knowing friends are trying to get through something like this, and it is hard to fathom.

Hi Rachel and others.

Yep- we're well away from the coast. Looks like the storm is going to pretty much give us a miss, so Tehani should do fine. I did have to use my spare anchor line to secure the jerk's boat who is upwind of us, because he had TWO docklines on the boat. The dockmaster was kinda ticked at the guy too. If I lose my anchor line the city will get me a new one, since I secured the guys boat. Our trucks are tucked under cover, one under the house and the other inside a steel framed barn alnog with bails of hay.

Getting here yesterday was a real exercise in frustration. At one point we managed 3 tenths of a mile in one hour, but we made a phone call, got advised of a REAL back road, retraced ten miles of road, hit the back road and made it no problems. Of course the temps were in the 100s(one place showed 106 at 1:30)

There are THOUSANDS of people along the exit routes who are out of gas and just sitting along the roadside. The state promised them tanker trucks but they are very slow in arriving. No idea how long that will take, since most towns are empty of gas. There were something like 2 million people trying to evac the coastal areas. This storm has probably already cost something in the area of 300-400 million bucks just in plywood and gasoline, and it isn't even HERE yet!!!

Charlie:

Best of luck with this storm - it does look like it'll move east of you, I certainly hope you come through OK. I'm glad you and your family got out of the way - that traffic looked almost as nightmarish as the hurricane.

Glad to see that you're safe Charlie (and Laura) -- and even gladder that it looks like Rita will give you and Tehani a miss.

'Course that means it's going somewhere *else*. I tell you, what we really need is on of those "runaway truck" ramps for hurricanes. They just peel off onto that and spin out their energy in the virtual gravel...

Whew but that evacuation sounded like a trial!
