Blind sailor takes Meridian to Hawaii

Post by Commanderpete »

Don't know if Rachel & Charlie have seen this. My friend with a '64 Rhodes Meridian sent it to me

Story about a blind sailor who sailed solo to Hawaii

I had seen that Pete, but thanks for posting it anyway. Hard to imagine his trip since I get a kind of closed in feeling on night watch just when there's no moon at all. It was quite an undertaking.

Not that it takes *anything* away from his accomplishment, but it's interesting that they call it a "motorless sloop" when you can clearly see the outboard leg hanging down in the photos; and it's even churning prop water at one point. Doubt he would have used much -- or at all -- during the trip anyway, of course --- wonder if he pulled it up and laid it across the well to reduce drag?

The Monitor is quite a collection of stainless steel hardware on that little boat!

Wonder what that sailor is up to these days.
