Your State Lines?

Had a lot of fun with a PBS documentary last night. They were searching for the exact Northwest boundary of California. The first thing to raise an eyebrow was that that the Entering California and Entering Oregon signs were quite a few feet apart...no-man's land? The boundary was supposed to be Latitude 42, but wasn't. Using a GPS the host and 2 scientist determined the exact boundary. A business owner on Highway 101 was horrified to learn his property may be 1/2 in CA and 1/2 in OR! The CA tax implications alone could be horrendous given the far cheaper OR taxes this chap paid. How about future property transfers? Upcoming shows are going to investigate the other 3 corners of the state.

Can't imagine you Maine residents wanting to be said to be living in MA.

Will technology upset the applecart?

I'm off to the marina to see if I can share another sail. A few evenings ago got to go sailing on a new to me Sanibel 17'. It's one thing to rig a 30 footer, but this little sloop was ready, and cruising in a matter of minutes. A total pleasure on a sunny Spring evening.

That's why New Hampshire is there: to act as a safety buffer against just this sort of event.

Actually, Maine used to be part of the Massachusetts colony but we tossed out those lazy unproductive butts long ago... A couple of my early relatives were scalped by the native americans while fishing in Maine. They probably deserved it because they were fishing in areas they were not supposed to be but in any case, no one in my family has had much desire to go back up there :-)

A very true point, and one which Mainers would like to expunge from history!

I think it was more like Maine said "we don't want to associate with your kind" and organized a separate state!

(Actually, I don't really know exactly how the two states came to be separated, but it's fun to tease anyway!)

I believe it was part of the Missouri Compromise to keep the balance of slave and free states...I think. It's great to have kids in high school, you learn the darndest things!

When I was a student, we had spiral bound notebooks that had a map of the New England states on the cover. We in New Hampshire always took great offence at these maps, as they showed the borders of Maine and Massachusetts kissing at the coast, and we all know that's just not true. New Hampshire's got 13 miles of coastline, and we're damn proud of it, too.

Xroyal, I should add that there does remain some dispute about exactly where the boundary between Maine and New Hampshire lies down in the corner by the coast. Of course, the Mainer's will probably dispute that fact (that there remains some dispute).

Well, the US Supreme Court has ruled on the matter, after all! :<)
