I'm reaching the end of my tether. Rain. More rain. And wind. And fog. Oh, and did I mention: rain? And wind?

It rained 21 days in May.

It has rained 6 out of 8 days in June. We've already surpassed our monthly average of rain for this month.

I'm starting to get twitchy. Just like Jack Nicholas in The Shining.

My boat's been in since May 17 and I haven't sailed yet. How screwed up is that???

The one nice day that coincided with me actually being able to use the boat was Memorial Day. Wind: 0 knots. Seriously. Zero.

The other day that I thought I would get to sail in the morning was fog. Thick. Visibility 150 feet.

Oh, that's being far too kind. It's more like "surpassed exponentially". As of last night, the statistics on the local news indicated that Portland had had 3.7-something inches of rain already in June, with an average monthly total of just 0.77 inches.

Here in the northeast, we're seemingly endlessly stuck in a very winter-like pattern, one which funnels moisture straight up the coast and sets up slow-moving low pressure systems that spin into classic nor'easters, complete with 40-knot winds and heavy precipitation--the stuff blizzards are made of. We're not supposed to see this sort of thing in May and June; yet, all winter long, we never once got into this pattern, which led to our near-snowless winter. Until the pattern changes (with its infernal "omega block"), we are likely to see more and more of this, including later this week and this weekend.

These rain days aren't helping my house construction either. One or maybe two good days in a row, followed by often 2-3 rain-soaked days, do not rapid progress make.

Summer in Maine is short enough without this annoyance. But what can one do about it? I sure haven't managed to miss having the boat in the water yet, other than in a purely general sense.

This is all just typical early June weather. It did the same thing last year, and look at the great summer we had! This bodes well folks!

It seems I misunderstood the statistics as I saw them. It turns out the 0.77 inch number was the average normal to date for June, not the average monthly total.

Nonetheless, we've still had a ton of rain!

Hopefully you're right! Once this pattern changes, we'll all quickly forget the rain and pain.

By the way, complaining about the weather is the Maine state pasttime. Too cold. Too hot. Too rainy. Too dry. Too foggy. Too much snow. Not enough snow. Too many tourists. (Oh, wait: that's another complaint...)

So bear with us. It's really just all conversational.

Tim,

I can identify with that. One year I lived in San Diego, and it took me about six months to notice that I was the only one making conversation about the weather. I guess when it's 72? and sunny every day there just isn't that much to say...

In the way-upper Midwest, however, it's a staple of social interaction ;-)

Rachel,

That's one of the main reasons I moved from Marin County, CA to Oregon, the disgusting uniform pretty weather. As a transplanted Eastener to CA, a darkened sky meant a storm about to hit. Then the fog would lift to another boring beautiful day. Took away the excuses to snug up in the boat cabin or light a home fire, and kick back with a good book.

This time last Sat I was driving thru Central Oregon toward Vancouver, WA to get my Santana. Talk about the results of rain. There are creeks, lakes and rivers everywhere! GREEN is that area's first name.

We don't talk much about the weather here because it changes every 10 minutes.

4:08 p.m. June 10, 2006. The rain has stopped. I think I'll go outside and take a quick look around.

LOL- this has been a fun read. Here on the Texas coast, we had 3 inches YESTERDAY, to go with the 3 inches we had two days ago. Since the third week on June, this area has had almost THIRTY INCHES of rain!!! That third week of June, we sat over in Louisiana and watched the weather- our area got 16 inches in two days!!

Of course it has been coming like bananas- in bunches. It'll pour for two days, then shut off for a week, then pour for two days. Right now it's stopped for a while.

I empathize with you folks- last year we went through that stuff trying to get Tehani ready to launch- we loaded her onto a flatbed in a roaring downpour.
