It seems you have managed to make Plastic Classic boats attractive to an amazingly wide audience. I noticed the last few members all seem to be porn stars. Not suprising really. I suppose one starlet picks up a classic and after helping her with the project and a few sails her starlet friends probably get the bug.

I can't wait to see photos of them at work on their projects. I just hope this doesn't cause people to get into restoring classic boats for the glamour of it.

Oh the joys of public web site ownership.

Don't be tempted to follow the WWW links for these "members", unless you like restoring computers as much as Classic Plastic.

Yes, yes, I am aware...unfortunately, I have fallen terribly behind on removing the registrations of these new "members". There are over 100 false registrations since the last time I caught up a couple weeks ago. It'll take me a couple hours to delete all of these, but I don't know when I'll have that kind of time.

These robotic entries are extremely annoying; I get sometimes as many as 10 in a day. They can't hurt anything, as new members (as it were) cannot post unless I activate the accounts, but it's annoying nonetheless.

Sadly, this whole rigamarole often causes me to miss the new legitimate registrations, which creates delays for their activation. I will continue to try and keep up with the proper registrations, as well as delete the old ones.

Again, allow me to implore all new prospective (legitimate) registrants to please avoid the use of user names that seem meaningless! This makes it much harder for me to cull out the bad ones from the real ones. I don't want to delay or miss completely a new registration from a real person.

I always activate clearly legitimate registrations at once, but names in code or some weird amalgamation of letters can be very hard to distinguish from the fake registrations, and I can't always take the time to go in and read profiles. Please, for your own good, use a clear user name! If you have a special name that you like, then send me an email to let me know so that I can activate you immediately.

Meantime, just don't click on their profiles. Ignorance is bliss!

This is important enough that I am repeating most of this answer in the "Forum News" category.

Tim,

It hadn't occured to me that you might not actually be taking care of these registrations... I always try to help out when I know you are away, but I'll try to hop on this a little more often!

Sadly, yes. One of the responsibilities of my day job is to preach safe computing to about 1300 users that have better things to do.

Computers and the Internet may be useful, but that utility is attenuated by the challenges created by people behaving badly. I very much appreciate the efforts of Tim, Nathan, et. al. who take on these challenges willingly to make this valuable forum possible. I'm sure there are compensations, but there are many hidden costs as well and the work surely feels thankless at times.

It's clear to me that this is a labor of love. Thanks, y'all!

Please don't interpret my previous post as a request for more action on these new "Members". I noticed one of the addresses and I just couldn't get the image of a porn star engaged in a deck recore out of my mind. The thought of it made me chuckle, as well as a little itchy:).

We all really appreciate all the hard work you do on the forum. I didn't mean to imply anything else. I was just hoping to inject a little humor into what I'm sure must be a very frustrating problem. Your forum is a great resource and I hope you'll be able to keep at it in spite of the idiots out there.

Thanks, Brock. Don't worry--I enjoyed the humor in your message! Still, I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain the problem once more.

If by "compensation" you mean the camaraderie, valuable opinions, friendships, and general enjoyment this forum provides for me, then by all means there are compensations. That's enough for me.
