Progress is progressing

Post by Peter »

Today was 'roll-out' day for the San Juan 24. Of course it decided to rain half an hour later, but boats were made to get wet, right?

Splash day: May 4th :)

Peter,

The boat looks pristine! Very nice :-)

Time to roll the Triton in? ;-)

(Okay, maybe after a summer's sailing on Adios.)

Looks great!

Somehow, it's always an adjustment when your boat, which has been comfortably ensconsed under cover for so long, gets wet again. Then you realize how silly that notion is...but the first instinct is to be overly protective!

Happy launching!

Looks good!

Are those stripes paint or vinyl? Or did that come up in the painting thread and I just missed it?

Nathan: The stripes are painted. I layed them out with 3M FineLine tape ... a bit pricey, but there was no bleed-through along the edges as masking tape will sometimes do. It comes off easily, too. The name is also painted. I had a sign shop make a couple of stencils on low-stick vinyl. That worked pretty well, except where I loaded a bit too much paint on and had a dribble.

Someone advised me to get the tape off as soon as the paint tacked up, to give the edge a smoother line. It worked out well.

On the non-skid I used a product similar to Durabak-18.

I got a good application tip from the supplier: Double-Mask off the non-skid areas. Apply the first coat, then peel off the top layer of masking immediately. Peel off the second layer of tape immediately after applying the second coat. If you let the product set up before removing the tape you have to run a razor blade around the edges to trim off all the rubbery bits that were overlapping on the tape. That worked well, too.

Rachael: I've put the Triton project on hold for now. It's time to go sailing :)
