I'm coming out of lurking mode for a minute to ask a question about bolting in my boat's chainplates.

Spurr's "Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat" states that bedding compound should be applied to chainplates and backing plates before fastening. But I've been using guidance from Tim's Glissando and daysailor projects to guide me, and I can't see that there is evidence of bedding compound on the daysailor chainplates http://www.tritondaysailor.com/images/c ... alled1.jpg

My question is this: I'm getting ready to bolt down my chainplates and wondered if I need to bed them to the knees and bulkheads?

I don't believe I have heard of anyone doing that. I guess it might help spread the load if things were a bit uneven and I don't think there would be any harm in doing it. The covering escutcheon definately needs to be bedded though. it should be rebedded fairly frequently as well as these areas are notorious for leaking.

I didn't even pick up on this obvious fact. There's a picture in the book and everything, and I didn't see it for what it was. I'm feeling pretty stupid. Thanks for clearing this up.
