Outboard Lower Unit repair

I'm doing some repair work on my "B" motor - an old ('77) Evinrude 9.9
I need to remove the lower shift rod from my non-functioning lower unit to put into a good lower unit that I just picked up on EBay. My old E'rude is a long shaft - newer lower unit is from a short shaft.

Question is this, specifically:
Does the lower shift rod screw into the shifting lever/yoke ass'y?
Can I remove it by just turning c'clockwise?

I'm looking at a diagram on the Evinrude site - if anyone's got a link to a better source of info, that'd be great. (Or if you can just tell me, better still!)

Never mind - answered that one myself.
Asked while drinking first cup of coffee while still too early to go out and just *try* it.
Answer: yes, they do just thread out.

If anyone has some outboard motor repair stories they'd like to share, I'll keep checking in here today while I put Motor B back together.

I could use some tips on needed repairs for Motor A - an '89 Yamaha 4 stroke whose water pump impeller needs replacing. Took out the bolts holding the lower unit on - can't get LU to separate from body :0(

I have gotten a lot of great information on my 9.9 Evinrude from this site.

Thanks, Mark. It looks like there's a wealth of info on that site. Saw a link to another site where someone had posted a series of photos of lower unit removal on a Yamaha. Thanks again.

I had problems separating the lower unit on my 89 Yamaha 9.9. I am assuming you have the high thrust 4 stroke?

I soaked mine with lots of penetrating oil, and "persauded" it a little with a hammer, tapping down on the anti-cavitation plate. I got it loose, but chipped off a chunk of the plate, which I glued back on with some JB Weld (it was on hand).

I seem to recall that the shift lever has to be in one spot to remove and reinstall the lower unit. Don't remember which spot. Luckily there is only 3 (forward, neutral and reverse), so shouldn't take too long.

Have fun.

Ahhh - I tried some 'persuading' too, and inflicted some slight trauma to the plate. Stopped before things got too ugly. I'll try the penetrating oil route.
Thanks.

Does the website tell you which gear to have it in? I don't remember.

Not sure that it does. I think I saw a mention in some thread that whatever gear position throws the shift rod down (probably forward) will make a connection on the linkage accessible.
The more I realize the importance (Duh!!!) of a reliable motor, I begin to think I might drop it off at the dealer for the repair and a going-over.
I'll still try the mucho penetrating oil approach . . .
