Swageless fittings for standing rigging

Post by HudsonM »

Anyone have experience with these Navtec fittings? I need to replace one fitting on my forward lower shroud (it has a hairline crack) and this seems like an interesting option I could do myself.

Thanks,

Yes. I have used both Navtec (Norseman) fittings and Sta-Lok fittings, with good success. They are quite easy to use, and if you follow the directions it's hard to make a mistake.

Here are some descriptions I wrote up for both types:

I have not used the Norseman (Navtec) fittings, but have used a Hayn Hi-Mod fitting. The Hi-Mods are a "second generation" design (Norseman and Sta-Lok being "first generation" designs). I like them.

(Available from West Marine, RiggingOnly, Fisheries Supply, etc...)

Some cruisers' experience suggests that the Norseman fittings are re-usable, while the Sta-Loks tend to gall (http://64.70.221.24/DiscBoard/viewtopic.php?t=856).

I have to strongly second the HAYNE HI-MODS!

When I replaced all the standing rigging last year, it took me a mere 20 mins for each fitting. I've worked with Sta-locs before and I gotta say that the Hi-Mods are a vast improvement because of the crown ring that keeps the wires in their place. And you can re-use these as long as the inner cone hasn't been deformed. Rigging Only had a great price on these.

I have a thing against the Navtec fittings, but I think that has more to do with the fact that all of mine were cracked when I bought my boat (and thus had to replace the rigging). I'm not a fan of the closed turnbuckles either. I had to laugh because all the "extras" the PO had on the boat for emergency purposes had hairline cracks in them too... but other than that, I have no experience with them.

I third the Hayn Hi-Mod

On the fittings, the threads need to be lubricated or they'll gall. Don't believe that is in any of the literature. The rigging only poeple and Hayn have been excellent to deal with.
