Hood sea furl

Post by windrose »

I found a used Hood sea furl on the net I might consider with some help from the forum. Does anybody have one of these on their boat? Are you pleased with it?

Can you guys help walk me thru the installation should I decide to purchase it? Are there specific weakness that I need to inquire about before purchasing it? What do I need to make sure matches to it on my boat?

Any additional info you can offer to me would be helpful as I have no experience with installing the furler or the furler itself.

As always, thanks alot.

Before you buy it, make sure you can get replacement parts if needed. I don't know how old the unit is, but parts for older ones could be tough to come by. Do you have more specifics on the exact model and age? Why is it being taken off and sold?

In the most general and non-specific terms, roller furling installation usually involves sliding a liner over the stay, over which is secured the aluminum foil. You usually need to remove one end of the stay. Depending on the setup on the boat and the furler, you may need to remove one of the swaged ends from your stays and replace it with a mechanical connector (Sta-Lok, etc). The methods between brands vary widely and are not universal by any means.

Hood sea furl

Post by JonnyBoats »

I installed a Hood Sea Furl on my LeComte Northeast 38 in June 2006. I am extremely pleased with it. Hood provided excellent advise and support for installation. I had the advantage of being in Tampa, FL and able to visit with the product manager at Hood's Tampa facility.

One thing I can tell you is that there is a _big_ difference between the newer and older units. Also I highly recomment that you confirm that the unit you are considering is hefty enough for your boat.

I took a complete set of photos of the installation process and will be happy to share them with anyone who would like to see them.

I didn't buy the Hood unit, it was one of the older 810 units with the double lines. I am watching for a newer unit or I might take the plunge and purchase new.

I would be VERY INTERESTED in seeing your installation photos.

Good move. Those double-line versions are awkward.

In my opinion, I think it's well worth it to buy a new, modern furler rather than look to save a few bucks on an older one. Yes, they are expensive, but the new ones are just worlds and generations better. I am a fan of roller furling, of course, but only if it's sturdy and reliable. The new versions are both; the older ones...not so much. You always take a risk with an older roller furler.

Here is a link to a description of my installation, in 2001, of my Schaefer furling system. Installing a Schaefer 1100 furler

Good luck, whatever you choose.
