Fresh water cooling

Post by The Good Goose »

Would the A4 freshwater cooling unit sold by Moyer work on a small diesel?
I have a 1GM10 by Yanmar it would be considerably cheaper then a Yanmar unit.

I was wondering the same thing.

The heat exchanger would almost certainly be adequate.
The pump volume would be adequate once one worked out the appropriate pulley diameter.

I think the biggest challenge might be the bracket mounting of the second water pump. Not insurmountable, but certainly fussy. Of course one could start with the actual Yanmar bracket and adapt to whatever pump Moyer provides.

I assume that the yanmar is already equipped with thermostatic control and a bypass line, yes?

As an academic exercise, this is a cool thing, but for you Brock, I wonder if it's worthwhile. I know your engine represents a significant investment, but man you sail in freshwater! Will conversion to glycol coolant really make a meaningful difference in the life of the engine?

I would not do it if we stay in fresh water. We are thinking of a year long cruise and if we did that I might consider it. I don't know if I have the valve and bypass line or not. I'll have to look.
