Weight of a Stripped Down Bristol 19?

Post by triton318 »

As I must suffer from some kind of disease pertaining to plastic classics, I purchased a 1965 Bristol (Corinthian) 19 a couple of months ago. I have a trailer ready and am planning to bring it home in a couple of weeks. I have a pretty good estimate of the weight of the trailer; now I need a good estimate of the weight of the boat, so I know what will and will not be able to pull it.

According to specs I've found online, the boat displaces 2,724 lbs and has 1,100 lbs of lead in the keel. I'm trying to get a good estimate of its current weight. Everything has been stripped out/off of the boat--deck hardware, cockpit seats, cockpit sole, all interior wood, coamings, rudder, tiller, mast step, chainplates, winches, etc. It's basically the hull, deck, and ballast. Oh...and all of the water-logged, nasty, stinky positive floatation foam was also removed. (That was nasty.)

I'd appreciate your best guess. Please. Don't be shy -- I'll take all of the estimates and get an average; that should be good enough.

Thanks much!

Jay

Here's a picture before the stripping commenced (boy did it bring back memories):

Just how fine are you trying to cut the tow vehicle's capacity for this?

I ask because the stuff you've pulled out isn't enough weight to really make a difference between a tow/no tow situation. So why bother with guesswork? Just plan on the boat weighing its displacement (2700), and you know you're safe.

It the tow vehicle won't safely handle the boat's actual designed weight plus the weight of your trailer, which you say you know, then it's the wrong vehicle for the job. The fact that you've removed deck hardware and woodwork and the like isn't going to make or break the situation.
