Hi everyone,
During the last few months, I spent most of my spare time rebuilding my old volvo MD7A. I rebuilt it mostly to learn how it works (it is my first diesel) and to have a better idea of is real condition. The engine is 31 years old and I didn't know much about is first 30 years of life exept that it was in fresh water...
After many hours of meticulous measurements, it became obvious that the engine was in really good shape. Far better than I expected so, I decided to converted it from raw water to fresh water cooling (unlike the previous owners, I sail the (salty) gulf of St-Laurence) with the hope of getting a couple more years of use out of it.
Here's the question : Does anyone know what kind of 12V electric pump I can use to pump the cooling fluid.
I want an electric pump for ease of installation (no custom pump bracket, no pump modification, etc.) and because the engine room space is quite small in an Alberg 30. For security reason, I will have all the piping needed to quickly swicht back to raw water cooling in case of a pump failure. Plus a good temp gauge and hi-temp alarm...
Any advise is welcome
Thanks to everyone and sorry for my bad english but I'm from northern Québec...

Electric coolant pump

Dharma,
Bienvenue au forum!
I can't help with your question, but I wanted to welcome you, and also to say "nice boat!" (I used to own Alberg 30 #221 :)
I hope you will share photos of your Alberg with us (which will be even easier with the new software that is coming soon). I'd love to see her - and everyone here likes photos (we can be quite demanding, really).
Sounds like you really know your engine "inside and out"

PS: Ton Anglais est archi bon (meilleur que mon Francais, evidemment, mais on dois l'essayer) :D

I have an electric coolant pump on a marinized kubota diesel that I have. Its basically a Universal m3-20B, but slightly different block, no mechanical pump.
To pump coolant you need something that is rated for continuous duty.
I have one of these:

Made by Johnson. Rated for continuous duty, magnetic drive, and can handle hot liquids. Not self priming, but very small in form factor.
Jabsco also makes one:

I've also used the Johnson model on hydraulic stabilizer system installs I've done on large trawlers (Grand Banks) to pump the cooling water for the hydraulic oil cooler.
So far so good.
