Compass question

Post by radicalcy »

I bought a used AquaMeter compass on Ebay. There is a large bubble in the globe. Is this something that I can fix myself or do I need a pro? Is it even worth fixing? I paid $50 for the compass. A new one runs around $100 plus shipping.

On the compasses I have worked with there is a plug somewhere on the housing where you can pour in more compass fluid. The trick usually comes when trying to get that last little bubble out of the housing. It tends to move all over the place except where the plug is (and thus out).

Compass question/problem solved

Post by radicalcy »

I found the problem. There is a rubber boot that seals the globe, and it's leaking. Mark this one up to "lessons learned" Buy new, when buying a compass.

Before you throw it out check the manufacturer's website if available. You might find you can order parts to repair the compass.

Then of course there is always silicone...
