Location of Hot Water Heater

Post by Rob Richardson »

I spent the most of the weekend running new H2O lines but got stuck when I started questioning my proposed location for the Hot H2O tank. I bought an Isotemp Basic 6gal tank and had planned to mount it vertical on a bulkhead in the starboard lazaret all connections inn the bottom postion. I have a freshwater cooled SB12 that I just replaced the Sendure heat exchanger. The exchanger is attached to the same bulkhead. Question, is it critical as to the height of heater? Does it need to be lower than the thermostat on the top of the engine or lower than the heat exchanger? If height does not matter I would like to mount the heater higher up on the bulkhead in a more out of the way space, freeing up more storage space in the lazaret. I am concerned that if I mount higher than the engine or the exchanger then the water may overflow out of the top of the relief hose on the exchanger. The instructions are very vague only saying to mount with the connections on the heater lower than the engines header. HELP!

PS The Daysailor is should be a Foldout Pinup Gal. She is a 10+ and a inspiration to all of us wana-bes. Thanks Rop Richardson

Answer to the water heater problem

Post by Rob Richardson »

OK I see that no one has an answer for my water heater location problem. So after some research I figured out that the heater connections must be below the engine header tank. I now know that the Isotemp Basic 6.3 gal heater I bought seveal months ago from Defender will not fit. I have now ordered the new Isotemp Slim Square which will fit perfectly as seen by the block of styrofoam I cut to its dimensions. If anyone is interested I will be listing on the classifieds my Isotemp Basic 6.3. It has never been used or installed. Other than sitting in my office for several months it is brand new. Defender has this model listed for $489.99 I will be glad to sell it for $350 plus S/H. Practical Sailor gave Isotemp their highest rating. If interested please contact me at [email protected] or [email protected]
