Triton Keel Width

Post by Harry James »

How wide is the Triton Keel at the bottm? Will a 6" wide channel on a trailer be wide enough?

Not really. She gets pretty fat up forward. How high do the flanges stand? (how deep is the channel)

OK, I got off my arse and went out to measure.
If the flanges aren't taller than 2" or so, you might get away with an 8" channel, but I'd feel a whole lot better about a 9.

6" will only catch the last 3' or so. Cod's head, mackerel tail, and all that.

Now Mike, you are leading someone astray...

Externally ballasted Tritons, like Mike's are whatever he just said they were. Later model Tritons with the internal ballast are noticeably fatter in the keel. I can't check mine because it isn't just outside the door but I have seen the two types side by side and there is an immediate and obvious difference.

If you, Harry, have an externally ballasted Triton then Mike gave you the answer. If you have an internally ballasted Triton... Let's see... Nathan's boat is internally ballasted and it is at Tim's shop ... so Tim could check for you. Tim doesn't mind the little N'oreaster that's blowing outside right now so I am sure he won't mind. That's why they love me :-)

Hey Tim, if you drown while checking, can I have the Seabreeze?

No chance. More like 12" would be a safe bet, particularly for the internally-ballasted models.

I think I'll pass on the checking until the morning, thanks. It's now sleeting, as well as blowing 50. Sweet.

I doubt Harry needs this information by 2000EDT, so tomorrow ought to be fine!

If Nathan gets the Seabreeze can I have the Daysailor? I am going to be boatless for next season after all. I would take good care of it.

Well, geez man, I know how much you love your boats, and I thought I was doing you a big favor by making sure it doesn't end up in the scrap heap. It's not like I'd actually want the thing. Really, now.
