Used Sails

Post by wstokes »

Has anyone bought used sails from a sail loft. I am looking at replacing my worn out genoa with a new sail, but the cost is around $2000 Cdn. So I am investigating used sails. My sail dimensions are: luff-34' to 35', leech -32' to 34' and the foot can range from 14' to 16'. Material weight should be 7oz min. with #6 luff tape. What has been your experience with used sails?

I bought an unused Doyle jib from Bacon that was a great fit, right luff tape, etc. that was about half the cost of a new sail from Rolly Tasker. It just needed a cover (roller furled) and I was done and happy.

It took me some time to figure out the range of geometries that I would accept and to educate myself about other construction qualities. I found Bacon to be easy to work with and quite helpful and knowledgable.

Sounds like you are pretty clear about what you want. Don't forget the cover and think about a padded luff (improves shape when reefed). Try to make sure that the sail will set properly within the limits of your lead blocks range of adjustment.
