I have a new (to me) project boat (1976 Kells 28 Outrider) with a Yanmar inboard and Morse throttle/shift controlls. The throttle is loose and returns to idle unless held in position. I am unfamiliar with inboards and these controls and cannot find any way to adjust the friction or other method to tighten this up. It seems to me there must be some routine method of doing this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, there certainly is an adjustment for that. Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me remember exactly where or how! Perhaps if you remove the round housing at the base of the controls? There should be na allen screw or something in the bottom to allow removal, I think.
Is your control roughly like this one?
One thing you might try short term is to clamp a small set of vice grips loosely on the cable itself to increase friction. You don't want a lot of pressure--just enough to hold the pliers in place.
