Great Lakes cruising guide

Post by dan sundy »

Does any one have a recommendation for a cruisng guide to all of the Great lakes. I have the L. Ont "Ports" book and will probably get their Georgian Bay offering, but need the other lakes.

The GLCC has put together a comprehensive set of guides to the Great Lakes. Their membership fee is fairly high, but the guides are an incredible resource. You might want to check them out if you haven't already.

Their web address is: http://www.glcclub.com/

I've heard many good recommendations for Bonnie Dahl's "The Superior Way" from local Lake Superior cruisers. She and her husband keep their boat at a marina I used to work at, and I know they've done lots of Lake Superior sailing, but I've never actually read her cruising guide. (And it's Lake Superior only.)

Here's a link to a spiral-bound version of the latest edition:

Lakeland Boating

We purchased the Lakeland guide as a supplement to our current Lake Michigan GLCC guides. About the only redeeming quality is the full-color aerial pictures of the harbors. The harbor descriptions are pretty weak, focusing more on local dining and entertainment than harbor approaches, etc. I guess a listing of marina phone numbers came in handy once. I don't know if all the Lakeland guides are similar, but you might want to thumb through one before committing to the purchase price of 45 bucks.
