Fireplace Johnny Noble Fitting

In the shared details department, I include a description of a LeComte North East 38 fireplace stack fitting and wonder about other boats of the day.

Our fitting is a welded-up stainless flanged thing. It has a bit of pipe extending down outside the pipe leading down to the fireplace; the outer edge of the flange is turned up about 1". When needed, the johnny noble is stuck onto a bit of pipe extending up about 1 1/4". Normally, the smoke pipe is capped with a heavy stainless lid held on by gravity and a friction fit.

The two upturned features means that the fitting can hold water about 1" deep. Do you suppose this is to be filled with water to keep the deck around the stack fitting cool? Otherwise, why would they not have drilled the upturned flange to drain?

Well it's appropriate that you posted that..... Charlie.

It'd be interesting to see a photo of your set-up, Quetzal.

Here're a couple of a fitting sold by Navigator Stove Works (as Britton posted once before) - it sounds a bit like the one you describe, and has the water trap to keep it cool.

I only knew Charlie's brother Johnny.

The cast fitting is much neater than LeComte's. It would be nearly flush. It's screws are not in the bottom of the reservoir.

I thought the "Charlie Noble" was the head on the chimney that keeps the wind and rain from affecting the discharge of smoke. I have heard the actual fitting through the deck (as shown in the photo) called a "Deck water" fitting.

Just what I have heard in any case.

actually you are correct- but he asked about a "Johnny Noble" fitting which is NOT a correct name.

But my answer to him WAS correct. Grin
