Howdy from Pacific North West!

Post by Coronado23 »

We bought a '71 Coronado 23 last fall and spent the winter painting
and getting it ready for splash day..

*It's great.. We love it and have it in the water all summer on the
Columbia River Vancouver,Washington..

Vacation we drove up to SE Alaska to view the Gizzly bears and came back on the BC Ferry down the "Inside passage"...

I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!

*On return.. I picked up two Volvo Penta marine diesels.
A MD7A and a MD6A as a parts engine.

The Coronado will be a great boat to learn sailing this season
and gain experiance.. *But my heart is going thump for a 6'
cabin and inboard that can sail around Vancouver Island,Canada and
explore this wonderful crusing ground.

Pearson Triton led me to Tim's web sight... and other boats might
be Alberg-Islander- or Chinook-Cascade built here in Portland,Or
I also like the Rawson 30 if I can find one.

*I'm 55 Navy Vet and still punch the clock.. *That can change real quick
with a good looking boat<G>

Yes, welcome!

My first cruising was done in the Vancouver Island area, and I fell in love with it too. Really neat country, and so water-oriented. You've gotta love a place where boats and float planes are the "family cars." :-)

Welcome also. I just returned from a very short sail in the San Juan's. And today that meant sailing like made against a flood tide with light wind and not even making out of Fisherman Bay on Lopez Island. And this would be a "bad day" in the Pacific Northwest. Still had a heck of a couple of hours.

It is such great sailing up here so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. And look me up if you get up my way.

Also, when you are thinking about upgrading to standing headroom think about sail area as well. This is such a great are to sail but boats have to perform in order to sail. Most "cruising" sailboat just motor up here while I have an ear to ear grin. Yesterday I tried to keep up with an Aphrodite 101. Oh my gosh what a hot rod. No standing headroom but she could sail anywhere she wanted in the San Juan and Gulf Islands.

Thank you, Bill (blushing).
That is a photo of Paceship Westwind #11 - a Ted Hood design. Built in Nova Scotia at Mahone Bay.

*Thanks all..

I first tasted a flood tide crewing on a '38 morgan as a novice.

We cleared Anacortes marina and powered into a fog.. Skipper
put me up on bowwatch and we came up on the lower corner of
Lopez Isl. about point colville-

Once clear.. we spent the day headed west, I went below for a snooze
so as to stand the mid-watch with the Skipper..

Late in the afternoon, I was haveing a dream of a large giant picking
me up.. and throwing me down against my will! *When I opened my
eyes.. I saw grey water- then grey sky!

Progress had slowed below one knot with the engine.. and Skip came up
*pissed!

"Hey! what the H*&#! We arn't out here to KILL ourselves!"

He turned the boat downhill and we SURFED back to Port Angeles
"Boat Haven". Darn, was I happy to be tied up then!

3am we headed back out.. all was good to go- and we turned at
Tatoosh Island and came down the 30 fathom curve to the Columbia
Bar.. and up river to Portland.

It's my dream.. to do that again, on my own boat.. to know what
I need to know- know where to go and why I'm there and make
friends along the way-

Here's a photo the previous owner of my Westwind had sent me along when I responded to his ad.

Something about that heart-shaped ass peeking out from under the cover...
