How to best tie mooring to moring bit on deck

Post by preserved_killick »

Ok, rookie question. I've got a mooring bit up on the deck, what's the best way to tie up to a mooring pendant with the typical spliced eye?

The only other boats I've been on that had a similar setup were large wooden boats that had true sampson posts that were much bigger. The pendant barely fits over the ears on the post on these boats and was just dropped over the post. My mooring bit is smaller, 5 or 6 inches at the base and the pendant is about an inch in diameter. It fits over the ears on the bit a little too easy. Remembering that Yale makes pendants with a little cord built into the loop, I took a small bit of rope and tied it around the bit over the pendant, then around the forward part of the eye, closing it up snug on the bit. I was satisfied enough, but is there a better way?

I bet that small line is a 'monkey line'.

If the spliced eye is too big you use the small line to wrap around the throat of the eye and choke it down to the size you need. Using a slip knot in the monkey line makes it quick to take off again.

I have the same bit you do Jeff. I use the "monkey line" (I never heard that term, but know no other either) to tie off over the splice in the bridle such that the splice could not slip off. The strain stays on the bridle, the "monkey line" just acts to idiot proof the connection. By using the ears of the bit like a cleat you can figure 8 (clove hitch) as the final tie off.
