Ready to paint the bottom - have plans to traverse the inland waterway to Pensacola using Pettit Hydrocoat. E-mailed Pettit and they said Hydrocoat would be "effected" by the oil - didn't say how - just check it when we get to the Keys. After further inquiry they said the oil will effect all bottom paint. I hear the Coastguard can inspect and require the bottom to be scrubbed at your expense.
My question is: would hard epoxy be easier to clean off the oil and more likely survive the process than water based ablative? I sure don't want to redo the bottom in Key West.

What bottom paint to use if going thru the BP oil area?
Re: What bottom paint to use if going thru the BP oil area?
I guess it might mean two haulouts, but I would be tempted to just scrub the bottom now, make your trip, and then prep and paint the bottom with whatever you want to use for the future, after you have cleared the oil zone. Of course hauling in Key West would be pricey, but are you going somewhere else before or after that where you could haul out? You could even buy the paint now, while you (presumably) have a car and etc., and then just bring it with you.
