Topsides Paint

Post by George ( C&C 40 ) »

Hi All,

I currently own a 1979 C&C 40 that has a somewhat faded and patched green Imron hull ( topsides ). I've decided to take the plunge and re-paint her topsides this spring. Any ideas on the amount of topcoat I'll need -- I can work backwards from that and get the proper amount of converters, etc. BTW, I'll be rolling and tipping out the paint by hand. The color will either be a flag or aristo blue with a snow white boot stripe and gold leaf cove stripe and lettering. Like Tim did with Glissando, I'm planning on three coats of topcoat.

I have some experience brushing Awlgrip and was just going to take a guess on the amounts needed, but I know Tim and his father once owned a C&C 40 and might have a more educated guess. ( I tend not to trust the brushing coverage by square foot amounts given on U.S. paints website )

The plan is to sand the green Imron until fair, apply one coat of 545 primer, sand fair again and apply topcoat. Anyone know if Awlgrip may be applied directly to Imron or the primer under the Imron? I don't mind the extra step but two days of sanding and painting saved is nice.

Thanks for the help,

George

If you have any doubts about compatibility, follow the prescribed tests found in the Awlgrip application guide. There is a series of 2 or three tests you should perform in sequence. I doubt you'd have any problem going over the Imron with the chemically-similar Awlgrip, but you should definitely do these simple tests to be sure.

I'm not sure what amount of product you will need; my dad had the boat done at a yard in 1990. I'd probably start with 2 gallons of everything, plus the appropriate amounts of converters and reducers. But this is a total SWAG.
