I'm looking at a '62 East Coast Triton, and during my first visit to the boat I snapped some pictures. One of them shows some markings on the forward side of the starboard bulkhead between the v-berth and the hanging locker. I assumed this was some factory mark, but it doesn't look like a hull number because there are too many digits.
What is this number, and what does it mean?
Glad to be in the forum, and to be making a first post!
That's a US documentation number, which means your boat is documented with the government. This is a means of permanently identifying a boat, and makes it easier to travel overseas with the boat. In some states, being documented means that you don't have to display those ugly registration numbers on your bow. (Maine being one of these states)
It's easy to change the documentation information to reflect your new ownership. All the information and forms you need are at this link:
Thanks! Excellent info, and this novice just learned something useful.
I searched for an info plate in the cockpit but didn't find one. I remember hearing that on most Tritons, the hull number can also be found somewhere on the bulkhead. I'll look more closely during my second visit.
Sometimes an actual hull number is stamped (in small numbers) into the mast arch beam, too. This seems to be fairly common.
Since the boat's documented (and up to date--I checked it out using the number above), you might even have a chance of finding relevant paperwork on the boat, some of which might indicate a hull number. Perhaps not, too.
