Cruise 2005 preview

Hey it'll be a little while before I get anything up on my site, but here's a quick peek at the 05 cruise....

Three weeks, first week was the Bachelor's Cruise with Britton, Tim, and I terrorizing Penobscot Bay. 2nd week was Family Cruise with my wife and son. 3rd week was Solo Cruise, as I brought the boat home. Mostly excellent weather. Just a couple days of fog and a couple of partial days of rain. Cool, though.

New icebox was AWESOME: 7 blocks of ice for 3 weeks of cruising! (Compare to old box: 2 blocks per 3 days).

Attempted sinkings: one.

Different harbors visited: 11.

More than the usual amount of actual sailing on this cruise too, which was great.

Impressive!
I don't even remember you posting anything about icebox work over the winter, mr. sneaky.

Looking forward to more details of The Cruise.

Well... er... yes... *cough, cough*

I sort of never got around to writing that up... it'll get done. I hope. I did, though, have 2 project log entries about it last fall:

Here are a couple of other pics. I basically followed the same basic procedure as Tim did when he built his box, but with a couple of key modifications, including the addition of a drain which runs to a sump, and dual lids allowing maximum access to the box.

Yeah, I was surprised at that.

Ok, heading out the Western Way, steaming in no wind, 2600 RPM, I look down and see water above the cabin sole. Bilge FULL. Flipped on the bilge pump and it drained her. Investigation showed no signs of water ingress from any of the seacocks, head, or raw water system. No sign of catastrophic leakage from the fresh water system.

Best guess: siphoning through the bilge pump via the outlet in the counter, though with the 3 separate lines (auto bilge, man bilge, and sump) running to the outlet I wouldn't expect that it would be possible to start or maintain a siphon.

Weird. That's a lot of water. Did you take a moment to calculate your heart rate while troubleshooting the problem?!

Nathan, what the heck is that black bucket thing in the background of the hose-tree pic above? Waterlift muffler?

(I swear I was reading old threads with a legitimate purpose. I have some semblance of a life.)

Question on your icebox Nathan; Is your icebox built to the height of the original galley counter (port side) or is a bit higher.

And for bonus trivia points, what is the standard measurements for a block of ice or to put it another way, how big does the icebox hatch need to be to fit a block of ice inside? I have never had the luxury of sailing with ice so I never got around that minor detail.
