wood winch handle source

Post by JSmith »

Any one know of a source for the wooden part of a winch handle. The ones we're using are worn out and cracking.

Thanks, Jon

Get a wood baseball bat.

Cut and drill handle as needed.

Send me a diagram of the dimensions and shape of the handle, and I can turn you one on the lathe. I don't have teak in my shop, so I'll need a blank if thats your choice of species. I have mahogany, white oak, hard maple, and beech among others.

How is the wooden handle afixed to the metalic section?

I turned one a few years ago. I simultaneously turned the handle and what would become the cap to cover the end of the threaded section and nut. That way not only was the fastening covered, but the color and grain matched.

It doesn't happen often enough, but once in a while being the parent pays off :)
