I removed my diesel fuel injectors.

Post by Tom Young »

I'd never done it before on previous boats. If it ran, I figured why bother. Change oil, filters etc. I post this in case anyone else is considering this, here's my experience.

My Nissan SD 22 diesel began to smoke an embarassing amount last season(likely built over a few) and was starting slower, so on advice and reading, I decided to pull the injectors. Easy enough with the right sockets etc. It took about an hour to carefully remove return lines, high pressure supply lines, injectors and glow plugs. I carefully kept things clean and covered openings.

Next I consulted the mechanic at our local boatyard and he sent me to Atlantic Fuel Injection in Windham Maine. I sent them (and everything else) with the request they do what they think they need even if it meant replacement.

The injectors came back with new nozzles, everything nicely cleaned and primed.
The only problem was the seals they supplied (standard for these Bosch injectors) weren't the same. It was good that I sent the old ones in (on their advice), the injetors would not have seated and may have caused damage with the seals they sent.

I found the seals elsewhere as well as new glow plugs(I tested them, checked out but seemed like a good time to replace). I was unable to find the Bosch glow plugs locally and they were pricey too, 40.00 a piece. These NGK glow plugs (in the bag with the correct seals) were 10.00 a piece and were what I removed.

So back it all went in a about an hour. Then the moment of truth. It was instantly apparent the injectors had been causing a loss in performance. The start up was fastest ever I recollected. Very little of the old stumbling until all cylinders fired. And no black sooty smoke, just normal 70's vintage diesel gray smoke. With the raw water pump belt removed, I can only run a couple of minutes on jack stands but the results are telling.

My experience tells me I should have serviced these injectors sooner and it's not much of a project or cost. The benefits are high.

Thanks for that, Tom. I probably should pull mine and have them looked at. My engine is definitely harder to start than it used to be as well.
