Bow rail mount for nav lights?

Post by John, CD28 »

I'm going over to LED nav lights, and I want to get the red/green to hang from under the center of the bow rail.

I have the light, an Aquasignal Series 32 deck mount. Is there a mounting bracket/hanger available anywhere?

If none are readily available, maybe I can make something from dodger hardware? To mount the light itself, I'm thinking I need a clamp or two to grab the bow rail, something for the light to sit on, and a bracket to connect the two. The wiring is easy enough - I'll run it up through the rail tubing to feed the light.

Has anyone been down this road? Any ideas/advise/suggestions?

Any and all help is much appreciated.

Sailing involves the courage to treasure adventure, and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.

Quetzal's running lights are mounted to the pulpit and to the Monitor with small, neat scraps of stainless welded on. Beats the clamps and bolted brackets that would not be so hard to make.

Take your local welder out for a drink.

Surely, you can buy an adapter from the mfr., then it's easier to arrange the connection to the boat.

You might wish to invent a bracket that puts the light under the pulpit and aft enough so that it's not the first thing to arrive at an impediment, nor a ready target for the anchor or rode. Mine are under, and I don't snag them without extra effort.

One other consideration is how much the bow light might reflect off the pulpit. One boat I've sailed on, we had to wrap black tape around the pulpit because of the way that particular light/pulpit combination reflected so brightly.

Not saying you shouldn't mount it there, but you might want to check it out at night before you decide on a spot.
