Puzzling, water down below

Post by BALANCE »

I'm on the hard with a canvas cover and last weekend I discovered a small puddle down below at the companionway ladder.

The mast? (did not take it down).

Since the mast is deck-stepped, it doesn't seem likely to be the source (sure, the wire entries could leak, but not right by the companionway, you wouldn't think.

I would check to see if water came under the front end of the companionway hatch cover in a wind. The one I sailed on had an added black rubber "flap" on the front to help keep water out (which worked, but probably indicates that water can get in under there, since there is not (typically) a sea hood.

Another thought is the companionway boards.

I see that you have a canvas cover, but is it impermeable even with wind blown snow/rain?

I guess if you're on the hard that eliminates tasting for salt as a clue...

There has not been a drop of moisture on deck all winter. And now water at bottom of ladder after/during rain in the summer.

You know those pictures I posted the other day? If you look at the bulkhead where it meets the cabin sole (picture looking forward) you will notice that there is discoloration from water.

Last weekend the puddle was right up against the nav seat. Looking inside the storage area under the nav seat it was damp.

I know water travels in mysterious ways, but this takes the cake.

It was drizzling that day...such a concentration in one spot though.
