Fluxgate compass/autopilot

Post by megalops »

My old navico autopilot isn't working well, the boat wanders under way, swinging 15 to 20 degrees in either direction, sometimes worse than others. Doesn't seem to have any relation to sea state.

A few knowledgeable people have told me that my fluxgate compass is most likely malfunctioning. I have two questions:

1. Is there a way that I can test my fluxgate compass to see if it is in fact the problem?

2. If I need to replace it can I use a raymarine or other brand of fluxgate comapss with my system? I don't think navico is still in business.

Thanks

I don't know which Navico you have (TP-10, TP-20/30, or TP-100), but if you have the manual you might want to go through the section on "Auto Compass Calibration". Sometimes this will help with the problem you describe.
