Thread Sealant for Marelon

Post by Ryan »

For those of you that have used marelon thru hulls and seacocks, do you use a separate dope on the threads when mating the parts, or just a generous does of the bedding compound (life-caulk, etc.) as the thread sealant? Thanks.

I don't think anything is required but I have installed them with 4200 and I don't worry if I get a little bit on the threads as well.

No leaks to date.

Teflon tape or a pure teflon pipe dope like Real Tuff, which is made by Hercules Chemical, will work fine. The advantage of Real Tuff is that it is not an oil or solvent based pipe dope so it will not affect the plastic.

Or you can use both tape and dope together....... I'm ducking!

Of course if you are threading a thru-hull into a marelon seacock (through bolted) then 3M 101, Sika 291 or 4200 will be fine. For the threads inside the boat tape or dope or both..
