Anybody know the make of this boat?

Post by Scott »

I was told this boat is a 1959 Aloha in about the 42' range by someone (not the owner) that lives near where it has sat apparently neglected, for the past 5 years or more. I haven't been able to find any information online or anything that remotely resembles this particular model, or any confirmation that it is indeed an Aloha. Anybody have any ideas what it might be?

That sailboat looks to be a Rhodes Bounty II. Its a 42 foot sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes. It was first built by Coleman in 1956 or so. Its the largest early fiberglass design I know of. Pearson later acquired the molds and modified the deck a bit. I know the one in the picture is a Coleman Rhodes Bounty II because it has huge aft portlights and fiberglass coamings. Pearson Rhodes Bounty IIs had smaller portlights and wooden coamings.

If you are thinking about buying this boat... It has cast iron ballast so check that out. If the keel doesn't show bulging, the cast iron ballast is fine. The Coleman versions were mostly solid fiberglass - had little core in them as I recall. For this reason, they can be refurbished a bit more easily than sailboats with cored decks. I could be wrong in this, though - it was common to build one hull a bit differently than the previous hull during the early fiberglass days.

Thanks Case, It's amazing what you can find out about a boat once you know what it is! I am not interested in buying her, apparently it's not for sale in any event. I was just curious as I had never come across a boat like her in all my searches for good old classics. I have my hands full with my Triton project. She has been sitting for several years without any attention. I hope the owner doesn't let her go to far before putting her back to rights.
