Another bottom paint question

Post by radicalcy »

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, so bear with me if I'm longwinded, or just seem dim witted.
I've sanded all of the ablative paint from the bottom of my 40 year old Columbia Sabre. There are several areas that had been previously repaired, and others that had been sanded down to bare glass. I primed inadvertantly with Interlux Polyurethane Primer. I meant to use Interlux Epoxy primer. Can I apply the Epoxy over top of the Polyurethane? Or better yet, can I simply apply the new ablative over the Poly? The boat was in the water for 6 years with no Osmosis blisters and still had ablative on the hull. The only reason I sanded it all off was to fair out the hull. The previous owner had rolled a barrier coat, with out sanding, and the finish was pebbly all over. So, whats the verdict. Do I have to start from scratch?

At the risk of passing the buck, I think the best answer to your question will probably come from the folks at Interlux. They'll know the right answer, and should then also be prepared to stand behind it too!

I will say that most polyurethane paints tend to form small paint blisters when constantly submerged (as they would be here). Therefore, my guess would be that you should remove the polyurethane to ensure good adhesion of your bottom paint in the long run.

Good luck.
