Wet stuff

Post by JonnyBoats »

How many have taken something nice, like a camera or some piece of electronics, put it in the cabin of their boat (locker, bunk, wherever), gone sailing, and then fouund that item had water on it?

This has happened to me on every boat I have ever owned!

It is frustrating, has anyone found a solution?

dri-deck

Post by FloatingMoneyPit »

It's not perfect, but I've lined most of the hull sides in my lockers with the dri-deck plastic grating. It keeps the condensation off the bottom of stuff, at the very least. Teak slats would be nicer and might help absorb ambient humidity in the locker.
But I know what you mean in general. I've left books sitting on the galley counter and come back a week later to find them waterlogged. I guess we have to improve our passive ventilation setups. Or sail someplace less humid.

this months sail magazine had an article on all the plastic bag and hard case things for electronics. I think some of the problem may be with the salt water. once it touches anything the salt film will pull water out of the air. if care is taken to never let salt water touch the instrument and if you store it removed from the atmosphere, with some silica packets, I believe there will be less possibility of the item becoming saturated. salt water should be treated like an acid, maximum fresh water flush, that gets hard for the cell phone even though it works for foul weather gear.

I have a digital camera and the mechanism for moving the shutter always sticks when I use it on the boat. when I use it at my house it is much smoother and quiet.

Plastic bags would work, but be sure to get some of those silicone packets you see included in electronics packaging. They will keep moisture for forming inside the bag. You might also consider something like Pelican waterproof containers (http://www.pelican-case.com/) or AquaPac (http://www.aquapac.net/). There is also The Waterproof Store (http://www.thewaterproofstore.com/)
