Awlgrip 545 gray primer over old single part

Hi All,

Quick question. Anyone have any luck applying Awlgrip over old Interlux brightside paint. I'm doing a quick and dirty interior job on a Wavelength 24 I recently purchased and would prefer to use Awlgrip over a single part paint. I'm familar with all the tests you can do to make this determination but I was wondering if anybody has actually done it. I don't mind sanding the old paint down a fair bit but I would rather not spend the time necessary to bring it down to pure glass everywhere. You can see the weave of the cloth through the paint so it would take forever to sand the entire thing all the way down -- I'm doing the whole interior. If somebody has had success I'll do the tests and move forward with the Awlgrip. Thanks!

I've not done it. Just do the compatibility tests required, and if the interior passes, go for it. If the tests give any inkling that the old finish might be softening beneath the Awlgrip solvents, then I would not go forward.

If it's "quick and dirty", why bother with Awlgrip in the first place? Just for the Awlgrip experience? (Which would be a fair enough reason...)

Hi Tim,

I love the durability of the Awlgrip finish. The WL24 will only be used for racing so the interior is never going to see anything other than wet sails, cordage, and a beer cooler. My feeling was that Awlgrip would be a great interior paint for such an application and I would never have to touch it again. Plus the Awlgrip cleans up real easy if I get any mold or mildew and it can take some scrubbing. We'll see, maybe new Brightsides every five years or so will be easier than the massive prep work required for the Awlgrip.

Have you considered Bilgekote?
Tough as nails, goes on over anything so prepwork is minimal, and relatively inexpensive.

Hi Figment,

I'm using gray Bilgekote for the areas below the level of the seats and down into the bilge. The Awlgrip was for everything else.
